“Oh, just wait…”

Abandoned school house just after the rain

When we first got married, people often told me, “Enjoy the honeymoon phase while it lasts!”

I used to find it so discouraging and I could never understand why people felt the need to tell me this. On top of painting a dreaded pictured of the horror that was supposedly coming down the road, it also made me feel like I was missing something wonderful at the moment. I didn’t start my marriage with the supposedly “honeymoon phase”. We must have missed checking the box for that on our gift registry! We started our marriage in a “grieving phase” having just lost Vitaliy’s parents and little brother in a car accident. We also started with a “parenting phase” as we had just become legal guardians of his 15 year old sister. We lived in a new place, with no family nearby and friends we had only just made. There was nothing “honeymoon” about our life. But it was our life and it was a beautiful mess.

I’m now entering a new chapter of my life and I’ve found that there is a dreaded saying for this chapter too, “Oh, just wait…” You fill in the blank. I’ve lost count with all the ways people have told me my life is about to change…for the bad. And as quickly as they realize what they’ve said, they end it with, but it’s the best thing you’ll ever do in your whole life. I don’t doubt that there is truth to what they say and I’m sure their intentions are not malicious. But I’m always left just as confused as I was after I got married wondering how these things are helpful.

I called my mom crying one afternoon completely distraught after having yet another conversation filled with a string of “Oh, just waits”. Walking into motherhood is overwhelming enough, I don’t need someone forewarning me of all the difficulties that lie ahead. I will soon discover them on my own and figure them out for myself. My mother told me that life would change and some of those changes will be difficult, but it’s just like anything else in life, it’s what you want to make of it.

As soon as she said this, I was reminded of all the “honeymoon phase” warnings. Though they affected me, I didn’t allow them to define my own marriage. And as I work through my own fears of the future, I’m reminding myself of this yet again. Life is what you make of it! We were dealt a very difficult hand to begin our marriage, but we made beautiful things out of our mess. By God’s grace. And as my future fills with sleepless nights and poopy diapers and who knows what else, I’m trusting in that same grace to see me through life’s beautiful messes that lie ahead.

If you are single, quiet the voices telling you that marriage is everything or that marriage is bad. Neither is true. If you are newly married, quiet the voices that tell you to “Enjoy the honeymoon phase while it lasts!” Marriage is a personal journey and yours won’t look like anybody else’s. It will be filled with both beauty and mire, joy and pain, and all of it is worth walking through together. And if you are like me, about to embark on the road of parenthood, let’s quiet all those voices that cause us to fear and take it one day at a time. One moment at a time. Because that’s how life was designed to be walked through anyway.

The Perfect
Manly Date Idea

Vitaliy and I just returned from another lovely trip to Portland to visit his 91 year old grandmother.

Portland holds a special place in our hearts. Grandma is the main reason, but Portland’s creative energy and charming neighborhoods also keep us coming back for more. Being back there reminded me of an epic date night we had earlier this year that I never shared with you. Our date nights are looking a little different these days (this is pre-baby). Or this may have been the evening that led to said baby. Just kidding…kind of.

I was very excited about this date night because I planned it all on my own and it was set to be a surprise for Vitaliy. I think it’s important to have a good balance of activities that you both like to do and this one was planned completely with my Scotch-enthusiast in mind. I came across the Multnomah Whiskey Library in one of my social media feeds and pinned it on a secret board. I knew I had to take Vitaliy on our next trip to Portland. I did some further research on Yelp which really came in handy to get the best possible experience. It has a total underground, exclusive club vibe to it which can either attract or repel potential customers. I just planned our visit around all the feedback and we enjoyed every minute. The spirits and the eats were pretty unforgettable and we got to enjoy them in such a unique environment.

Perhaps your date nights need a little bit of a masculine touch to get your husband a little more excited. Multnomah Whiskey Library is located in Portland, Oregon, but I feel like these underground Prohibition type bars are popping up all over the place. Do a little research! Or just plan your own tasting at a nice bar/restaurant in your area. Regardless, the idea is to plan a date with him in mind and fully participate in something he loves.

Here are some other Portland inspired date ideas for those visiting the area or for sparking an idea to implement in your own town.

A Year of
Date Ideas: An Honest Update

Ocean view from Cliff House in San Francisco

At the start of 2014, Vitaliy and I filled 12 envelopes with 12 unique date ideas that we hoped to enjoy together once a month for the entire year.

We felt like our date nights were too routine: dinner and/or a movie. The majority of our date nights still revolve around this scenario. However, the envelopes of date ideas were our way of making a more conscious effort to add a little more investment and adventure to our time together. The way we would have prior to marriage. We’re not yet to the end of the year, but out of those 12 envelopes, guess how many we’ve done so far this year? Only three.

About halfway into the year, I was super down about how few we had enjoyed. I felt like a failure and in some ways a hypocrite since I also shared the idea here with you. But I recently had a change of heart as I reminded myself that life is about progress not perfection. The true is same for marriage. It doesn’t matter what happened earlier this year. What matters is right now. I took October’s envelope and decided it was feasible and worth us dropping other things in order to make it happen.

Last Friday we worked a few hours in the morning and then took off for an adventure together. We explored artwork at the Beach Chalet, ate lunch at The Cliff House, and walked the beach hand in hand. It was exactly what we needed and I’m so happy I put all of my “responsibilities” to the side for the day. Because honestly, isn’t my marriage my responsibility? Doesn’t it deserve to be a priority in my life? And the answer to both is undeniably, yes.

P.S. Today is the 10 year anniversary of our first date. Happy Halloween indeed!
