9 Years, In Sickness and In Health

9 Years Together

I promise to love you in sickness and in health. Those were part of the vows we promised to one another 9 years ago today.

When I spoke those vows 9 years ago, I honestly imagined the “in sickness” part would apply to us much later in life. I imagined one of us aging more gracefully than the other and the stronger one taking care of the weaker. I envisioned gray hair, weak bones, and wrinkles. But I was wrong.

Year 9 of marriage was definitely a test of loving through sickness. It’s easy to love in good health. But when one partner has nothing to offer the other, when there is not a mutual giving and receiving, that is the point when real love has the opportunity to deepen and grow yet stronger.

Along with the normal impact giving birth has on your body, I suffered two injuries when delivering Rose in February. This resulted in a very painful, long and hard journey that followed. A journey I did not envision when bringing my newborn baby home. The only thing I was capable of doing those first few months was feeding Rose, and even that was difficult in most positions. But Vitaliy did more than just rise to the occasion.

Going through his own personal challenges of becoming a dad and grieving the absence of his parents in such a momentous time of his life, to say he was struggling would be an insufficient description of his state of mind. So, what do you do when one person is sick and the other is feeling weak? This is precisely why love is not a feeling, but a choice. And why marriage is a solemn vow.

Vitaliy did as he has been instructed by God to do, he laid down his life for me. He put his own needs and feelings aside, and he tirelessly served me and Rose. Morning, noon, and night. Day, after day, after day, he made the choice to love. Never complaining and never asking for anything in return.

Everything I have learned these past 9 years of marriage, I have learned from Vitaliy. From his example. I watch the way he loves me, and I try to push back my selfishness, and mimic him. His love continues to soften and change me. I hope I can love him as unconditionally through the years as he has loved, and continues to love, me.

Vitaliy, though you often doubt your leadership ability in our home, let this be a written and verbal confirmation of all that you do. Jesus was the ultimate example of a leader. One who loved and served and ultimately laid down his life for us. But aside from God’s word, nothing has taught me more what that means and looks like then the way in which you love me. From all that I’ve heard about your father, I can see that he too was an example of this kind of love by the way he cared for your mother. I hope we have a son one day who will continue the line of loving husbands. But for now, I’m thankful to know that Rose will grow up knowing what to look for in a man by watching how you love her mommy so well. I’m one lucky gal. Love, your CP.

2015 Summer Bucket List

Since Summer is our busy season, we have to be even more intentional about making time for our marriage and family life.

In the past, we have definitely let the business side of life rule during this fun season. But we decided not to let that happen again this year! We drafted a Summer Bucket List that we can easily reference when we’re trying to make plans. In fact, this is how we spent date night last week. We didn’t plan ahead of time so we had no babysitter. Instead of canceling it all together, we designated one of Rose’s nap times to us. We cuddled on the couch and dreamed about our summer together, as a couple and as a family. Below is how we hope to invest the next few months. We may not get to all of them, but I’m confident that having this list will help us enjoy this season a lot more then we have in years past.

2015 Summer Bucket List

  1. Plant a vegetable garden made up of tomatoes, zucchinis, and cucumbers.
  2. Take a 3 day family trip to Southern California.
  3. Drive-in movie with friends.
  4. Date night at Foreign Cinema in SF.
  5. Spontaneous beach days when the weather is HOT.
  6. 4th of July by the pool.
  7. Find the best burger in the city.
  8. Backyard BBQs with friends and family.
  9. Smore’s on our deck under string lights.
  10. Explore different farmer’s markets.
  11. Track down the Frozen Kuhsterd truck.
  12. Have a strawberry shortcake night at home.
  13. Go berry picking and bake a pie.
  14. Camp at Yuba Gap with Vitaliy’s relatives.
  15. Take a boat ride on Stowe Lake.

We’ve already gotten started! Sunday afternoon we stumbled upon the Frozen Kuhsterd truck at the West Coast Craft show. It was so, so good!

Two things – what are your summer plans this year? And for the locals – where is your favorite burger in San Francisco?

2014 Make Marriage Happen

Bride and groom with their Moms

Well, I am officially off maternity leave this week. Or perhaps it was last week, I’m unsure. The days turn into nights, and the weeks just seem to fly by.

I haven’t quite figured out a new routine yet for office hours, all in due time. But what coming back from my leave really means is that the wedding season is about to start. We have our first engagement session this week and a wedding next week. I’m so excited to get things started!

As we gear up for the 2015 wedding season, I couldn’t help but look back at last year’s season. As I did, I discovered that we shared only one of our weddings from 2014. It’s kind of crazy as I think back to how many goals I did not accomplish last year. I started the year out with a hustle mentality, but when morning sickness and pregnancy fatigue hit, my priorities soon had to be shifted. There is a time and a season for everything. Last year was all about growing little Rosie and I’m so thankful I had the flexibility of not over extending myself.

Now that we are parents, our priorities are continuing to shift and our roles are changing. We are being stretched, challenged, and remade. There are definitely growing pains involved, but there is also a lot of excitement and joy as we embark on a new chapter in our lives. We are finally going to get around to sharing some beautiful wedding stories with you. And I am going to continue writing about my passion – marriage. As I continue transitioning and trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t work, I’ve asked two women who I greatly admire to help me get things started with my 2015 Make Marriage Happen series. They are two people who are honest, willing to be vulnerable and have a passion for marriage like me. I can’t wait to have them share with you!

Here’s a recap of my Make Marriage Happen series from 2014. I look forward to continuing to write about this topic that is always on my heart and mind. Now so more than ever!
