Sutro Baths Engagement Portraits
Alex & Tanya

We first met Tanya more than 5 years ago, before there was even a Tanya + Alex.

We were doing a styled shoot with the talented Erin Taylor from Bustle Events where Tanya and a group of friends modeled for us. We stayed in touch with each other over social media and I was thrilled when she contacted us to photograph her wedding to Alex this April.

Their engagement session was the first time we actually got to meet Tanya + Alex, the pair. They are the sweetest couple! Real, fun and kind-hearted. We left even more excited to be their wedding photographers!

Here’s a little Q&A to get to know them better.

Q. How did you meet and what first attracted you to each other?

A. We first met online. We texted for about a week before we decided to meet each other halfway between Sacramento & Rodeo (where we lived). Our meet up at a coffee shop turned into a ten hour date adventuring through the North Bay. Alex says the first thing that attracted him to Tanya was Tanya’s eyes, curls and her smile. Tanya says the first thing that attracted her to Alex was Alex’s description “I’d rather go on a hike than watch a football game”. Her close second was his smirky smile.

Q. How long had you been dating and where did you first say those three famous words “I love you”?

A. We weren’t dating for even a month when we both knew we loved each other; however, we were able to hold off saying it for about a month. We first said “I love you” on top of the large ferris wheel at the California State Fair.

Q. Can you share a favorite date idea you’ve enjoyed together as a couple?

A. Our favorite date idea is first going to get a coffee to-go, then adventuring through antique shops.

Q. What are you most excited about for your future as husband and wife?

A. We are both so extremely excited to spend the rest of our lives with our best friend.

We photographed Alex and Tanya’s engagement session at the Sutro Baths in San Francisco. This location is stunningly beautiful! It leaves you in awe. I couldn’t think of a more wonderful place to celebrate and document their love. We lucked out on an unseasonably warm day in the city too. We left thankful for our sweet clients, for the beautiful state of California, and to be doing work we are passionate about.

Alex and Tanya, we are so excited for your upcoming wedding! We can’t wait to get to know you both more and document your BIG DAY. After the wedding, you have to promise us a coffee and antiquing trip. Those are two of our favorite things too! Congratulations – we hope you enjoy this very special time of life.

It’s Officially Engagement Season!

We had our first engagement session of the year yesterday.

We got to spend with the sweetest couple at an absolutely breathtaking location. I walked away feeling creatively inspired, thankful to live in California, and grateful to work with the best people. I’m excited to see what this new year holds.

If you know someone recently engaged, please send them our way! We are booking 2016/2017 weddings and if there is one thing we’ve learned over the last 7 years in business, it’s that our clients, friends and family refer us the best clients. We’d love for you to help us add to the Pictilio family this year!

Happy Tuesday, friends!

Photo Shoot In Downtown
St. Louis

Throwback Thursday! We are starting a new series on the blog. Though a new series here, the concept is definitely not revolutionary. But we have so many old weddings and shoots that aren’t featured here and we have been having a ton of fun looking back. Seeing how far we’ve come in the last 7 years while also seeing how much the heart and vision of how we shoot has stayed the same.

This was a photo shoot we did back in 2011 with my cousin and his (then) girlfriend in downtown St. Louis, my hometown. These two are now married and own a thriving start-up called Artifox. They combined their architectural and design skills and produce some of the coolest products! Go check them out!

Photo tip: When choosing a photo shoot location, don’t feel like you have to choose the iconic backdrops of a particular city. For example, these photos were taken in downtown St. Louis, but we purposely did not choose the standard locations (Arch grounds, ballpark, etc). However, I have such fond memories of this shoot because it was shot in my hometown. It has the urban grit of St. Louis and the blistery winter can be felt as I look through these images. Simply shooting in a place you love will do the job of turning a photo shoot into a memory making moment. This will help you avoid any unmet expectations of wanting a specific building or landmark in your photos. And it will also likely offer a more intimate experience as the iconic locations are usually full of people. It’s really all about the two of you anyway.
